Does the ranking system have any purpose?

I was looking around the forum, and we had ranking system for Hatchling, Juvenile Gecko and so on. But I was wondering what's the purpose and how does it work? I can't really find anything around the forum about it. It would be nice to get some clarification on the system?

The ranks are simply post based ranks. The more posts you make the higher up you go.  I think the highest one right now is for 500 posts.
