I would like to see everyone's opinion of the Pros and Cons of the Original Gex.

Pros:
The art style is awesome.
The plethora of pop culture reference and just random stuff that Gex says.
The level designs are pretty good for the most part.

Cons:
Gex can become annoying to some with how much he jabbers lol.
Some levels are a pain in the arse to beat.

Cobra!

Pros:
  • Unique mechanics with the tongue and wall climbing
  • Plenty of level variety - Not just with themes, but also mechanics. The game never feels repetitive
  • Great visuals for the time - was probably the best looking 2D game of the era!
  • In depth and interesting lore - The manual has like 8 pages of prologue!

Cons:
  • Some annoying levels
  • Weird save system - where you need to go through certain levels and collect a VHS tape to save your progress, I got used to it, but it was still an odd choice. (I heard the later ports didn't even save the game and instead used passwords!)
  • Underwhelming final boss and ending

Yeah this was on an odd choice especially for a PS1 game.  I still remember somehow figuring out the password for the final world as a kid... That was amazing.

Yeah, Crystal Dymanics really didn't seem to like having a proper save system in their games. Most of their games don't even have a password system and expect you to beat them in one sitting!

Ravenfreak

Here are the pros:
A very unique platformer for it's time. Where most other characters were aimed at children, Gex was aimed more at the teenager/young adult demographic.

The pop culture references are a nice touch! Even though I probably don't get half of them since the game came out when I was only five years old lol.

The Cons:
The lack of a save system in the PS1/Saturn/Windows ports of the game. I know there were a few other PS1 games of the time that didn't have a save system either, I know Gex is a very early PS1 game and we were slowly making that transition where most games had a password system instead of a save system.  Honestly this is the main reason why I struggle to play the first game. I know passwords exist and I can easily just look them up but it's more rewarding to play through the game either by learning the passwords as you progress or having the ability to save. (Plus I can't get save states to work right in Retroarch. :V)

The game is very difficult too! Which goes back to the previous con I mentioned. I still need to get around to getting Ghidra to properly read the .iso so I can pry at the game's code and see if I can implement a save function in the PS1 version. :P
